In any BaZi reading you will hear "this chart is strong" or "this one is weak." It matters because the same character reverses meaning depending on which side you are on.
Here is what strong and weak mean, how it gets decided, and what changes once you know.
It describes how much support your Day Master — the character that stands for you — receives from everything around it. Plenty of support is strong; little support is weak.
One misreading to clear first. Strong is not good and weak is not bad. Strong has its own problems and weak has its own methods. This is not an axis of quality — it is an axis of direction.
The calculation is automatic, but knowing what feeds it makes the result far easier to read. Three things carry the weight.
If your birth month is your element's season, that alone gives you a great deal. A Wood Day Master born in spring meets its season; born in autumn, Metal is cutting Wood and the support drains away.
Tradition puts season first for a reason. No amount of other characters reliably beats the season.
Characters of your own element (Friend group) and those that produce you (Resource) add strength. More allies on the board.
What you produce (Output) drains you, what you control (Wealth) spends you, and what controls you (Officer) presses down directly. Plenty of those and the chart tilts weak.
This is the point. Strong or weak reverses which elements help you.

So "this element is good for you" means nothing without knowing strong or weak. The same Fire is relief for one person and gasoline for another.

As temperament, roughly this. A tendency, not a rule.
Weak looks like the worse hand, but it often is not. Given the right support, a weak chart frequently travels further than a strong one. It runs on borrowed force rather than its own.
"Strong means successful." No. Force with nowhere to go turns inward and comes out as stubbornness or conflict.
"Weak means fragile." Also no. Weak does not mean little force — it means the structure is not built to carry it alone. With support, it is not a problem.
"Just count the characters." Counting without weighing the season goes wrong often. One month branch frequently outweighs several other characters.
Strong or weak is the fork that sets the direction of the whole reading. Settle it and you know what you need; only then do elements and Luck Pillars mean anything.
